Stretches help develop a different type of muscle fiber -- the slow-twitch muscle fiber. Apart from endurance, and physical stamina, these muscle fibers are also more elastic and facilitate natural healing. Other type of exercise -- running, cycling, brisk walking, skipping and gym -- develop the fast-twitch fiber, meant for power. But it is a contracted muscle fiber, and more prone to injury due to its natural stiffness.
