Placing the hands on one top of the other creates a meditative mudra. According to the Bihar school mudras redirect the prana back into the body and mind. Most of us suffer from dissipated prana. This contains such wastage. This mudra is used for meditation. If the left hand is on top, it becomes bhairavi. If the right hand (as in ths pose) it is bhairav. The left hand on top is the female energy (cooler) and the left hand on top is the male energy (pingala nadi or solar energy).
It does not matter if you are male or female. U can choose the nature of energy (cool or warm) depending on what you are feeling for the moment and whether u want it accentuated or reduced. All of yoga must be practiced only with such intense and refined awareness...
