I compiled this article for Mid-day years ago. It threw up a lot of things about teens that helped me understand my kid better:) I had even put in my blog before I wiped it clean a while ago:) So repeating it, for those who missed it ...
But u know what, some people never seem to outgrow their teens.. old bodies, juvenile minds... maybe this will help them also clear their confusions!! And why yoga will help both types..

Smelly teens
Even their sweat glands act up! A different set of sweat glands, called apocrine, at puberty start releasing a thicker fluid which attracts bacteria that, when decomposing, produce the smell. Keeping trouble spots clean helps.

Teen brain
It is a different mechanism. Pre-frontal lobe (rational brain) spurts much later, between 17-20 years. Teens still have the animalistic limbic brain active. They cannot help being impulsive! Ability to learn creative skills slackens with puberty, making way for the organizational and abstract development. A stimulating environment helps establish brain circuitry that lasts life-long. Educationists need to be alert to the different intelligences in the adolescent – social, emotional, musical, kinesthetic, spatial as well as the newly-celebrated spiritual intelligence.

Sleep
The teen biological clock has a different rhythm. Sleep hormone melatonin is released later in their brains. Most teens take pride in being sleep-deprived. It could do well to remind them 9 hours sleep is essential for developing right judgment, fast reaction, better immunity, learning, memory, even sexual maturation.

Addictions
Lack of rational development ( prefrontal lobe) makes teens susceptible to addiction. Worse, their capacity for alcohol is greater. Damage from drinking on memory is greater, more lasting now. Smoking increases brain receptors to nicotine, making it difficult for teens to quit.

Eating
Teens need about 40 nutrients from their food. Before an important event they should eat two hours ahead to keep brain alert. Teens tend to ignore thirst signals. Teach them to watch their urine colour – clear is fine, dark means time to sip!
