Meditation:why do it?

Am reading an exciting book, Ajna chakra by Rishi Nityabodhananda (for the Bihar school of yoga( and found these amazing tidbits why meditation should be a serious part of our lives:
* heart beat slows down
*less oxygen need for the body
*relaxed sympathetic nervous sysem (less arousal, through senses)
* blood lactate levels drop (meaning less link-up with adrenals/stress glands)
* alpha waves (or theta waves) in advanced yogis
*more heightened extra sensory perception
*since the sympathetic nervous system is relaxed, the healing mechanism of the body/nervous system is activated.
