The book I referred in my earlier blog also links up the benefits of meditation with melatonin production (melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland). This hormone is also used in the synthesis of another "happy" hormone serotonin (which is associated with relaxation).

The melatonin production peaks during the early hours before sunrise, described as brahmamuhurta (the hour of the divine) in yoga (how well they knew these things, the ancients). My sister sent me a link which shows that in Islam too the pre-sunrise hours are described as the time of the divine (one set of namaz is prescribed for this).

Meditation during this time may impact melatonin secretion?

And what all does melatonin do?

According to a research published by the journal "Biological psychology", melatonin is

*anti-aging
*anti-stress
*boosts immunity
*can be used to help/treat life-threatening diseases
* can help control cellular damage caused by the stress of living and aging

Melatonin is "an extremely potent anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger",the book summarises.
